Every week at our offsite adoption centers, we meet wonderful families looking for their perfect feline companion.
Here are some of their stories, as relayed by the volunteers who staff the offsite adoption centers every weekend:
Nancy reports that after she had closed and put things away, at the Clackamas PetSmart adoption center, a single lady came back to get our beautiful Bavarian. She had been in earlier in the day loving on him, but the potential adopter’s Grandma didn’t want a cat. In a matter of hours, Grandma admitted that the cat had “gotten to her too” and decided to get him for her granddaughter’s up coming birthday. Bavarian will also only have a new mom to live with.

(After being featured on the Pet Page of the Saturday Oregonian, Adele was quickly adopted.) Adele has been at home since the moment we let her out of her carrier. I am amazed at just how quickly she acclimated and how much she seems at peace and happy. She comes when we call her, plops down on the bed, and starts to purr and has adopted the corner of the couch as her spot when we watch TV at night. She LOVES watching the birds on the deck and she has been nose-to-nose a few times with “Ricky” a squirrel who comes to the door for peanuts. She tolerates being picked up and held more every day and she and Rhonda have bonded.

Sunday, our very long-timer Piccolo went home. Everyone at the Clackamas PetSmart adoption center is so happy he finally found the perfect spot. Piccolo came out to Clackamas at the beginning of August. He is the sweetest boy, and we could not figure why he did not go home quickly. Early Saturday, a couple came in and spent an hour with him. They lost their last cat to cancer in November and were ready for another one. They really liked Piccolo, but wanted to think it over before making a decision. They called back later that day to say they really wanted him, but couldn’t make it back to the store on Saturday. I let the Sunday volunteers know to expect them. They were a very nice couple who will provide a great home for our handsome boy.

A lady who lives on her own wanted to give a kitty a chance. She wanted to adopt a black kitty as she heard that they are harder to adopt. She was very kindhearted and though not an exact Meet your Match match she seemed to fit the bill for Cocoa Puff, who was at the Tanasbourne PetSmart center. Cocoa Puff was acting like an aloof kitten and didn’t make any eye contact with the potential adopter for about 15 minutes. Once she did…it was love.

An older woman and her son visited the Petco adoption center Thursday and called the shelter Friday about Morgana Bear. She came in Friday night to visit again and adopt her. Morgana Bear will be going home to be a playmate to a three-year-old boy kitty wanting a friend and MB certainly has been needing a playmate too! She will also have a mellow dog (who is probably about the same size as Morgana Bear). Their cat chases the dog, but the dog just likes to hang out. Their male cat’s name is Boris. Morgana already has a new name—NATASHA!

An older couple came in to see Florentine. They saw her bio on Petfinder and were told she was at Tanasbourne Petsmart. They drove from Oregon City to Tanasbourne only to find out she was really at Tualatin Petco. So after they told me (Karen, adoption counselor) this, I knew they were serious about visiting with Florentine. This couple was looking for a quiet, non-confrontational lap-cat to be with their other two cats. One of which was adopted from CAT about two years ago (who was previously declawed—front and back). The gentleman held Florentine on his lap the entire time they were in the adoption center. She just purred! They are committed indoor-only cat people who extended window ledges for their cats to have a space to lie and watch the outdoors. They built an outside completely enclosed and secure wire cat enclosure for the cats to enjoy the sounds and smells of outside without any of the dangers. Florentine went home with a new laser toy and a dream curl, just for her room. She is going to be so loved!

At the end of the day, three young ladies came in looking for a kitten. They liked Amy. Amy played and cuddled—just being her all around cute self! Amy is a sweet little eight-month old who showed up at NW Vet Specialist with a large laceration (to the ribs) on her thorax. She spent a lot of time in a cage healing. She’s better now. Amy does play a bit rough, so we talked about discouraging that behavior. Her adopter has had cats before and is home quite a lot so is very willing to train Amy on the ‘no bite’ rule. She was sad about Amy’s wound and the time spent in a cage. She really wants to give Amy lots of love and play time.

Anna (Nana at the shelter) and Sebastian (Soul Patch) both were with us from April 2011 until December 2011. Soul Patch arrived as a very, very shy kitten who was scared of anyone touching him. He was adopted for a week or so last spring and returned because he ‘bit and scratched when pulled from behind the toilet’. We never saw this level of fearfulness from him; however, he persisted in being shy. Nana often hissed at visitors interested in adopting her, but not this family! She knew it was a great home from the start. Nana and Soul Patch became “bonded” at Tualatin Petco adoption center. They were often seen sleeping, grooming, and playing together. We crossed our fingers that they’d be adopted together, as Nana gave Soul Patch so much comfort. The adopters saw the videos (on CAT’s YouTube Channel and PetFinder) of them grooming and playing together, which prompted them to come down and meet them. In their new home, for the few couple weeks Sebastian hid under the bed while Anna explored the house. She would visit him under the bed regularly to groom him (and probably encourage him).
