Newbie

It’s hard being a black cat in an animal shelter.

Overlooked for the cute calico next door or the beautiful orange tabby.

Serendipity intervened for Newbie, a big black cat who blossomed when her someone special found her at an offsite adoption center.

Newbie needed a new home

Newbie was at CAT for over a year.

She is sweet as can be but is a big, shy, black female and thus was overlooked so many times.

Newbie would seldom come out from the recesses of her cage to be noticed. She had a way of blending into the walls. Many volunteers at the Tigard PetSmart adoption center took extra special care of this sweetheart, with lots of brushing and petting. We were so excited about her venturing out of her cage that emails flew out to the rest of the volunteer group when it happened.

One evening I was talking with another volunteer and we decided what Newbie needed was a sweet, single woman who just wanted a calm and gentle kitty.

The next day a sweet, single woman came in. Could this be serendipity?

She visited with the outgoing cats and was then reminded that what she was looking for was a mellow cat. She sat down with Newbie to get to know her better. I told this potential adopter that we recently determined what Newbie needed was a sweet, single woman. Smiling, she looked up and said, “Here I am,” and took Newbie home.

A few weeks later the adopter contacted me because she wanted to take Newbie in for a vet visit but she couldn’t get her in the carrier. So, I went to her home to put Newbie in the carrier (not a normal post-adoption service but CAT’s volunteers develop special bonds with the cats and their adopters).

Newbie looked FANTASTIC. Her hair had gotten coarse and was full of dandruff at the shelter, probably because she was depressed and not very active. After just a few weeks in her new home she was looking absolutely beautiful—her fur was dandruff free and shiny!

My favorite adoption of 2010!
